Employers

If you hire workers in Alberta, whether you need a WCB-Alberta account depends on your industry. Many professional service businesses are exempt, but some, such as engineering firms, must register.
Employers in a compulsory industry must open a WCB-Alberta account within 15 days of hiring their first worker. “Worker” includes full-time, part-time, casual and temporary staff, and contractors who don’t have their own WCB account. Employers in exempt industries can choose to buy coverage.
Accounting and bookkeeping: Exempt
Real estate agencies: Exempt
Management consulting (not engineering): Exempt
Architecture and design: Exempt
Advertising agencies: Exempt
Engineering: Compulsory. Business coaches and marketing firms are not listed by name, so check with WCB-Alberta.
From the exempt industries list in the WCB-Alberta rate manual. Your classification depends on what your business actually does.
Sole proprietors, partners and directors aren’t covered by default. You can buy optional personal coverage. For 2026, personal coverage ranges from $34,200 to $110,900.
Premium = your industry’s rate × each worker’s assessable earnings ÷ $100, plus any personal coverage.
For 2026, earnings above $110,900 per worker aren’t assessed.
WCB’s 2026 fact sheet lists a minimum annual premium of $200.
Within 15 days of hiring your first worker: register, if your industry is compulsory.
February 28: file your annual return, reporting the earnings you paid and an estimate for the coming year. Filing opens January 1.
Before you hire a contractor, and again before you pay them, get a WCB clearance letter to confirm their account is in good standing. If a contractor you hire doesn’t have coverage, you could be responsible for their unpaid premiums.
If you have staff, our payroll add-on keeps the earnings records you need for your WCB annual return.
